A Study on Self-Esteem, Depression and Health Status of Elderly Persons


Abstract
This study was performed to evaluate and compare self-esteem, depression, health status of Elderly persons. Data collection was done from June 30 to July 20,1997 on 144 people of 65 years of age and over in Kwang ju.
The scale used to measure health status was the physical and mental-emotional health instruments of the health status of the elderly(Choi young hee, 1989). Self-esteem was measured using Rosenberg¢¥s self-esteem scale and depression using Sl)S(Self-rating Depression scale). The data were analyzed using Frequency, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson¢¥s correlation coefficient by a SAS.
The result of the analysis were as follows
1. The general characteristic variables related to the level of self-esteem was religion (F=3.96, p<.01), the level of education (F=6.32, p<.001), whether they have a mate or not (t=5.32, p<.05), residence(t=9.63, p<.01), family living together concreteness(F=4.00, p<.O1), sources of living expense(F=3.54, p<.05).
2. The general characteristic variables related to the level of depression was sex(t= -2.08, p<.05), religion (F=3.41, p<.05), the level of education(F=8.32, p<.001), whether they have a mate or not(t=-4.21, p<.001), family living together concreteness(F=6.72, p~.001), sources of living expense(F=4.05, p<.O1), the amount of pocket money(F=3.72, p<.05).
3. The general characteristic variables related to the level of health status was the level of education(F=5.43, p<.01), whether they have a mate or not(t=4.16, p<.011, family living together concreteness(F=817, p<.001), sources of living expense(F=4.01, p<.O1).
4. There was a significant relationship between self-esteem and depression (r= -0 M12, p<.0001), self-esteem and health status (r4.5622, p<.0001), depression and health status (-0.6914, p<.0001).
Therefore, for the aging, were should provided them with physical, emotional and psychological support. It can be concluded that this study provides nurses with information to improve the self-esteem and health status and decrease depression.
